Season 1 - Episode 7:
The Loup Garou - A French Werewolf in Canada
French Canadian Werewolves
Believe it or not Canada has it’s own werewolf tales that differ from those traditional werewolves of Europe. It is called the Loup Garou and and tales of this beast were common in the Quebec area in the mid to late 1700’s. The werewolf curse is the consequence of being less than pious. It was said if you missed more than 7 Easter Masses…you were doomed to become a Loup Garou.
Much of the legends are said to have been influence by actual wolf attacks in France in the region of Gevaudan. I was said that a beast killed up to 100 people in the 1760’s. Some believed it to be a werewolf.
Another possible source of the legends was the Algonquin stories of the Windigo. These are creatures of First Nations lore that were said to have once been human but turned into cannibalistic monsters.
Artistically I’ve only delved into the subject of Lycanthropy a few times. Most recently a I created a few devices designed to ward off suspected Loup Garous.
This is a WERE-WHISTLE. Basically a dog whistle designed to make a werewolf tilt its head in an adorable way.
Next is a DEFANGER.
