Dancing Diablos and Foot Fancy Freaks: Anytime Access Class
Dancing Diablos and Foot Fancy Freaks: Anytime Access Class
It seems to me that if you were stuck in a fiery underworld that you’d be doing a whole lot of jumping…so if you’re jumping, you might as well be dancing. But I’m sure there are lots of weirdo worlds where all they want to do is dance, therefore in honor of all those disco demons and bouncing beasties, let’s get our “groove thang” on and create a dance floor where they can shake their booty. Using some simple crank mechanisms we will create a device to make our diablos hop and twirl. Once the device is created we will then move to create the little characters using a combination of clay and found objects. These dancers could be devils, Day of the Dead peeps, or whatever sort of critters you like. Next up is transforming the stage and the characters using the magic of paint, and this is where the magic happens. And when you’re done, it’s gonna be a hot time in the old town tonight!! Let's get this Art class moving.
Student Level : All levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced)
Supply List
You’ll need some sort of box for your dance stage. You’ll want this to be wooden (or you can sometimes find a very sturdy card stock box…the key is that it needs to be sturdy). The size of the box depends on the how many dancing devils you might want but the sample use a base box roughly 4”height x 4”depth x 7”length. If you wanted only one dancing devil a 4”x4”x4” box would work. (As a side note if you wanted a bunch of dancing devils…5 or 6… you might look for the wooden boxes they use for specialty wines or whiskeys those are usually around 4”x4”x14”).
Wooden checkers OR unfinished wooden wheels (the wheels use for Pine wood derby cars) “1 to 1.5” in diameter. You’ll want a minimum of two per devil.
Wooden dowels - 1/4” in diameter. As for the length should be at least a few inches longer than the length of the box. You’ll want some extra because were are going to do some different things with these.
Larger wooden circle - craft stores sell wooden plaques that would be perfect. 2 to 3 inches in diameter.
Toys or figurines – Depending on who/what you are creating a shrine to you’ll probably need some sort of character. Small action figures or dolls. probably not much bigger than 3”.
Aves Apoxie Clay 1lb or more (3lbs would be ideal). What you can’t find we will fabricate with this stuff.
Variety of other found objects that might be interesting additions to the shrines. Items like watch parts, gears, typewriter parts…. just about anything, really.
